Drake identifies as a Jew, and appearing last year on “Chelsea Lately,” the Take Care MC lumped himself in with fellow Jewish artists Matisyahu and Mac Miller, joking, “We all reenact Bar Mitzvahs … We do very Jewish things together.” In fact, Drake attended Jewish day school and had a bar mitzvah—two, if you count the one he staged in his “HYFR” video.

“When I had a bar mitzvah back in the day, my mom didn’t have much money,” Drake said in a behind-the-scenes clip released around the time of the video, according to Pitchfork. “I told myself that, if I ever got rich, I would throw myself a re-bar mitzvah.”
Drake was born Oct. 24, 1986, in Toronto, to a black father, Dennis Graham, who hails from Memphis. Dennis and Sandi split up when Drake was 5, and the future star spent his childhood with his mother. While the “HYFR” clip sparked controversy in some circles, members of the Jewish media, such as Stephanie Butnick of Jewcy, found the video to be, well, a mitzvah.

“It’s about young people taking ownership of their Jewish identity and engaging with it in a way that’s comfortable and meaningful,” she said, according to Pitchfork. “It doesn’t need to be super serious all the time.”
