PM OPENS NEW RECYCLYING COMPANY; WELCOMES INVESTMENT
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says ‘Jamaica Recycles' - a new recycling firm will make a significant contribution to the care and protection of the environment.
Speaking on Wednesday, January 16 at the official launch of the company located at 164 Spanish Town Road, the Prime Minister said the new initiative "brings investment, additional productive activity, and gainful employment, in addition to assisting to keep our environment clean."
According to the Prime Minister the company will provide the facilities to help Jamaica tackle a serious environmental problem of getting rid of the large volumes of solid waste products that homes, institutions and businesses generate every day. Noting the convenience of plastics and foam containers to modern life, the Prime Minister said it was important that innovative ways be found to dispose of such waste to save the environment and protect life on our island and the entire planet.
‘Jamaica Recycles' is a start-up company backed by American investors International Recycling and Reclamation Ltd and will undertake the
recycling of waste paper and plastics, with plans to expand the scope of services to include other recyclable material such as electronic scrap, industrial plastic, glass and metals.
The Company will pay for recyclable material either delivered to their Spanish Town Road Facility or collected at customer sites. Purchase price will be set based on the value of the individual recyclable commodity. The company will also operate a buy back centre at its processing facility where customers can sell their recyclable material.
