In an effort to increase the scale of pig farming in Jamaica, a group of Manchester farmers has been given a facility, which will incorporate waste management to cut production cost. A biodigester is attached to the building where animal waste is channelled to the system and broken down by, producing methane, which is to be reused to provide heating for the piglets. Methane gas, which is generated from the anaerobic breakdown of faecal matter, is being touted as a renewal energy source for farmers and households. The facility, which is built through the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) and implemented by JSIF is funded by the World Bank, is enclosed and separates the pigs into various pens with a central walkway, providing easy access for cleaning and operation.
