Chanan Williams had a crush on Sacha Gordon ever since high school. He told Flair, "It was the twinkle in her eyes when she smiled. She was in the cafeteria line and I asked her for a 'skip'. She gave it to me and smiled. The twinkle in her eyes got me."
While still at Clan Carthy High School, they developed a friendship and after high school as the relationship was poised to get serious, Gordon migrated to England.
Williams told Flair that he never got closure, so he kept asking all her friends for her number until he found one who had it. After numerous requests and clearing it with Gordon, Williams finally received her number in 1999. "I just wanted to see how she was doing," he told Flair. their first conversation only lasted for 10 minutes. However, when she returned his calls, they talked for seven hours.
By 2001, the conversations had been reduced to two hours, but they were now daily. "She didn't have any children, neither did I and she wasn't seeing anyone so we got serious and started talking about marriage - just throwing it out there and discussing hypothetical situations."
The Proposal
In 2011, after discussing it with Gordon's father and getting his blessings, Williams put his plan into place.
"I told her that I needed one of her friends' number in case I couldn't get in touch with her, I had the number of someone close to her." With two of her friends on board, they kidnapped a miniature teddy bear Williams had sent her for Valentine's Day the year before. The bear had a little basket in its hand and as it was empty he knew it would be the perfect prop for his grand plan.
The friends accompanied her to Jamaica and they formed a pixie group and planned to exchange gifts at midnight at a New Year's eve party to welcome 2011. "I didn't get her name, but we were all in on the plan. After the friend who pulled her name gave her her gift, I said I have one more gift for you and gave her the gift bag." Williams said as soon as she saw the bear she got very excited and yelled, "This is my bear!" By the time she saw the ring and exchanged excited looks at her friends, Williams was on his knees and the music had stopped as he popped the question.
With tears of joy she said yes, and as the announcement was made, the crowd applauded the couple.
On March 23, the childhood sweethearts said their 'I dos' at the Knutsford Court hotel. The ceremony was officiated by Dr Douglas Robb.
