The Jamaica Red Cross has been implementing the Caribbean Community Resilience to Disaster Risk (CCRDR) project in the communities of Osbourne Store (Clarendon), Slipe (St Elizabeth), Treasure Beach (St Elizabeth), New Forrest (Manchester), Parry Town (St Ann), Roehampton (St James), Machioneal (Portland) and Frome (Westmoreland) for the past two years. In partnership with the local authorities and the communities, the following has been achieved.
* A baseline study in each community
* Awareness/sensitisation meetings
* Vulnerability and capacity assessments (VCA)
* Trained persons as first-aiders
* Trained community disaster response teams (CDRTs)
* Procured equipment for the communities
* Completed community disaster plans
* Administered family disaster plans
* Implemented micro-mitigation projects
As a final component of this community preparedness approach, there will be installation ceremonies in the eight selected communities to formally instal the Community Disaster Response Teams (CDRTs). This occasion will give us the opportunity to equip the community with general tools as well as gears for the CDRT members, who will lead future mitigation and response activities.
The 150th year milestone will be observed nationally in Jamaica through the ceremony in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth on May 8 beginning at 3:00 pm.
Branches will host different activities in parish capitals for the local observance.
Director General Yvonne Clarke, said: "We are pleased that this very special occasion of our 150th anniversary coincides with a beginning for communities fortified with skills and eager to improve their lives. One hundred and fifty years after the birth of the Red Cross we continue to provide relevant and timely humanitarian service to vulnerable communities and are committed to doing so now and into the future."
