MORANT BAY, St Thomas:THE ST THOMAS branch of the Jamaica Agricultural Society is promising a treat for patrons at this years agricultural expo to be held at the parish office grounds, 13 Church Street, Morant Bay, on Saturday, June 22.
Originally planned for June 1, persistent showers forced a postponement of the event which, according to JAS parish officer Joan Finnikin, has resulted in a much tighterprogramme designed to derive maximum benefits for both exhibitors and visitors.
While the commodity boards will be well represented, organisers have added something for the adults, with representatives on hand from the Registrar Generals Department, the National Housing Trust, the Consumer Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Labour, the St Thomas Parish Council, as well as the Social Development Commission.
The St Thomas Fire Department and members of the Island Special Constabulary Force will also be there to share information on fire prevention and safety as well as help the public to better understand their roles.
While the livestock competition anddisplay will be limited to goats andrabbits, Horace OGilvie is satisfied that the quality and variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and ground provisions will be of a very high standard.
Speaking with The Gleaner at the official launch of the Denbigh agricultural show, Whitemarl, St Catherine, on Tuesday, OGilvie said: Coming off the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, our farmers have really gone out and planted, almost with a vengeance, as if trying to make up for those losses.
I am proud of how well they have responded in the wake of that natural disaster, and with the support of our corporate sponsors, are in a position to provide housewives with reasonably priced crops grown right here in St Thomas, he added.
The Farm Queen Competition is down to three contestants, but excitement is high, with local entertainers also welcoming the opportunity to showcase their talent. Gates open at 10 oclock with bounceabout and other exciting attractions for children and all members of the family.
