It is a journey which takes many people their entire lives, and at the end they are still left longing.
In her book Raise Your Vibration, Transform Your Life: A Practical Guide for Attaining Better Health, Vitality and Inner Peace, author Dawn James says all that we are searching for is already in us.
In the 158-page book, James talks about the source of discontent being the failure to live in the present and she shares a few quotes on joy.
The message is embodied in the quote by Buddha: "Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without."
She told All Woman that she chose to write the book after discovering the power of making conscious choices.
"You can choose to be angry or be free of anger; you can choose to be peaceful or to live in 'drama'; you can choose how to use your words to create harmony in your relationships and in your life," she said.
The book also provides tips on making healthy food choices which also have an impact on ones happiness.
James was born in the Caribbean but moved to Canada as a child. After graduating from university she had a successful career in human resources, finance and accounting.
Although she was happily married with children, she felt she was not achieving her full purpose.
After a near death experience in 2003, James was catapulted into the world of spirituality and higher consciousness.
She realised her gifts of intuition and healing abilities after that event, and a few years later, started speaking and later writing about how to live consciously with less stress and more grace and ease.
"Many people are living unconsciously. They buy things and eat certain foods but they aren't paying attention to what it is really doing to their bodies, their mind, their home, even the environment."
James has also authored the book series Raise The Vibration Around You and enjoys teaching through public speaking, women's and couples retreats, workshops and her books.
She has been called the 'de-stress diva'.
"My mission is to remind others that they have a powerful, creative intelligence that can guide them to live peacefully, in good health and in harmony," she said.
And what is the message James hopes the book will leave with readers?
"All you need is within you. Learn to listen to your inner wisdom, and pay attention to what you are creating each day. You have the ability to choose to live in a high vibration state and create peace and harmony in all aspects of your life."
