WESTERN BUREAU:
LILLIAN CRICHTON, Canada's Honorary Consul in Montego Bay for the last 25 years, was fêted for her longevity at a reception hosted by the Canadian High Commission at the Seawind Club, St James recently.
Robert Ready, Canada's high commissioner to Jamaica, hailed Crichton's service as distinguished. He said he was pleased that his office continues to receive positive testimonials of the yeoman service she is giving in Montego Bay.
"We are here honouring Lillian for her amazing service to the government and people of Canada for 25 years. It is the north coast that sees all of the tourism traffic from Canada, about 400, 000 plus, and unfortunately some of our citizens get into difficulty of one kind or another," said Ready. "Lillian's office is the one that they can count on for assistance, a smiling face and a welcoming hand," added Ready.
Ready presented her with a certificate of appreciation from the Government of Canada and the high commission for long and distinguished service.
Humbled by honour
In her response, Crichton, who was born in Canada, said she was humbled by the honour and would continue to serve both Canada and her adopted country Jamaica.
"I am happy that you have come this evening from the high commission in Kingston to share and celebrate with me and my friends, my 25 years of whatever I am doing, which comes from my heart," said Crichton. "I have always enjoyed doing anything for Canada, which is the country of my birth and I am of service to Jamaica, which is my adoptive country."
Crichton, who hails from Montreal, Canada, first came to Jamaica as a flight attendant with Air Canada. She has been living in Jamaica for the last 50 years.
