It's two years since our first encounter with designer Dana Baugh, who was as apprehensive — "I've never put my work on display in such an open forum before" — as she was eager to gauge reactions to her first showing in Jamaica. In the hustle and bustle of last weekend's well-supported EXPO Jamaica 2014, Baugh is fielding questions from patrons eager to grasp her design concept.
"It's a collection," she tells SO, "spawned by time spent with family on a not-so-perfect beach decorated with fish pots, washed-up beach glass, pebbles and driftwood." It's the kind of fond childhood memories coupled with south coast peculiarities that resonates. "Sometimes we get an inkling to take the road less travelled, as in the laser-cut acrylic fixture which is inspired by the manufacturing process itself, or laser printing, which is integral to most of our creations."
What's exciting from Baughaus Design Studio, the original creators of the ital mug with its unique thumb rest, are the new colours for the beach season: turquoise, sunny yellow, sea greens and sandy undertones - colours inspired by the vast expanse of Caribbean Sea. "We've been steadily increasing our product range to afford more options. And on the business side of things we are working on increasing our capacity and finding a few retailers to pick up the line locally."
Baugh's designs have started adding luxe details to homes and it's just a matter of time, we reckon, before they become super-prized and super-priced possessions like The Studio Chair created from Jamaican guango.
