Yara Pilbara's chief executive, Mark Loquan, spoke at a Chamber of Minerals and Energy health and safety conference in Perth yesterday.
He says there is no across-the board minimum safety code applying to contractors working at onshore processing facilities in the Pilbara.
Mr Loquan says he believes a system such as the one implemented on offshore rigs by the Australia's peak petroleum production and exploration body will boost the industry's safety culture.
"Right now you have Woodside and Chevron and various people doing their own programs," he said.
"So if I try to get a common safety standard for our business onshore, I can't find any equivalent like what they have for the offshore platforms where the industry has gotten together and defined that in a systematic way."
