MUSIC STAR Emeli Sande has spoken of the heartbreak she is going through as she divorces only after a year of marriage to the man she previously dated for 10 years.
The 27-year-old singer married marine biologist Adam Gouraguine in September 2012 at a low-key wedding in his native country of Montenegro.
Sande, from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, claimed they tied the knot in a moment of “madness” and their separate lives made married life difficult.
She said: “We were mates, but maybe we shouldn't have been married. We were married in the madness, the whirlwind.
“It was literally: Olympics, wedding - fly to Montenegro, get married, fly back - and we had maybe a week's honeymoon together.
“He was the person that had been there from the very beginning.
“And maybe I was just looking for ‘OK, this is my guy. Whatever happens, no matter how crazy this gets, I've got someone,’ but our lives were so separate.”
Sande added: “I was on tour all the time and I think it was quite unfair of me to want his world to fit into my life so much.
"He'd come on tour then he'd go away for three months on a marine biology expedition somewhere.
"When we caught up it was great and we could tell each other stories but it was almost like we were living our lives away from each other and growing into different people.”
Sande, who attended the MTV European Music Awards last night and is working on her second album, admitted the failed marriage almost led to a breakdown and said she still wants to remain best friends with Gouraguine.
“He was my first ever boyfriend. That's the only person I've been with for the past 10 years”, she said. “So losing our relationship more than the marriage was the big part for me to deal with.
"Losing that support and structure in my life was the biggest thing.
"We really did grow up together."
