Japan to spend US$3 billion on advancing women worldwide

apan has earmarked some US$3 billion for advancing the status of women around the world with the aim of improving their sense of independence. Recently, the empowerment of women became a guiding principle and has driven Japan's policies both domestically and internationally.
This announcement was made by Yasuo Takase, Japan's Ambassador to Jamaica, at a commemorative lecture staged by the Kiwanis Club of Kingston in association with the Kiwanis Club of Hopewell at the New Kingston Business Centre last week. The event marked the 50th anniversary of Japan-Jamaica Diplomatic Relations and Friendship, as well as Japan-CARICOM Friendship year.
"In the words of [Japan] Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe 'I do not have the slightest doubt that the creation of a society in which women shine holds the key to changing the entirety of society", Takase said.
The ambassador explained that the contribution of women to revitalise the Asian country's economy was one of the key features of the speech delivered by the Japanese prime minister at the General Assembly of the United Nations last September.
