New research has shown that they are at least 16-23 million years old, first appearing at the time when the great apes arose.
The research doesn’t address the age of the modern-day Ebola virus, but does show that Ebola and Marburg are each members of ancient evolutionary lines and that they shared a common ancestor somewhere prior to 16-23 million years ago.
