R&B SINGER D’angelo has ended a 14-year hiatus with the release of his new album Black Messiah.
Despite being a celebrated name in the industry, Black Messiah represents only D’Angelo’s third album release in a career that has spanned 20 years.
The new work was publicised by collaborator Q-Tip, who tweeted: “@dangelo album out 2nite! Black Messiah!”
Black Messiah comes on the back of multiple false dawns with D’Angelo previously announcing in 2009 that his third album was to be released and called James River, while a mooted tour never materialised in 2010.
An information sheet was distributed at a listening party yesterday (Dec 14) where D’Angelo himself introduced his latest work and spoke about its title.
He said: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album.
"Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I’m calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is all about us.
"It’s about the world. It’s about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.”
