In 1940, the English gave orders to establish an evacuation camp for anywhere between 7,000 and 9,000 war-threatened civilian inhabitants of their Mediterranean colonies, Gibraltar and Malta. Located at the entrance to the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar, which link the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, are found on the southern coast of Spain.
