The [color:dabe=blue !important][color:dabe=blue !important]Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) has been capturing Jamaican literary expressions for half a century, encouraging amateur and professional writers to sharpen their skills in Standard English or Jamaican Dialect. The Jamaican dilemma and experiences are encouraged and are reflected in the contents which are submitted in the Annual JCDC Creative Writing Competition, which are later displayed across [color:dabe=blue !important][color:dabe=blue !important]the [color:dabe=blue !important]island.
The Creative Writing Exhibition continues in a travelling showcase of the 2012 works islandwide, in celebration of the JCDC's 50th anniversary. The Creative Writing Exhibition will be on show at the parish library in the following parishes: St James, April 5-20; Trelawny, April 23 - May 7, and St Ann, May 29-June 29, 2013.
Poetry, short stories, novels, essays and plays are entered each year in the Creative Writing Competition and awarded medals, trophies, certificates of merits, and other prizes. A major component of the competition is the islandwide tour that the award-winning works are taken on. The writers can take pride in that their pieces are being displayed across the [color:dabe=blue !important][color:dabe=blue !important]island for members of the public to view and benefit from their talents.
According to Andrew Brodber, subject specialist for speech, drama and literary arts, "Participants are encouraged to consider the exposure that can be garnered from the exhibition of new works displayed for the viewing of both local and international publishers which will increase the prospects of publication and performance usage, and we invite as many [color:dabe=blue !important][color:dabe=blue !important]Jamaicans as possible to enter the JCDC Creative Writing Competition."
The closing deadline for entries in this year's Creative Writing Competition is Monday, June 24, 2013. Entry forms are available at the JCDC head office, 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, parish offices islandwide, or on the JCDC
