The expo was held under the theme, 'Mathematically Charged: Empowered for Life'.
With low mathematics results at both the primary and secondary levels,Education Minister Ronald Thwaites said that the fear students have of mathematics needs to be addressed to allow for advancement in the subject to aid in the development of [color:c080=blue !important][color:c080=blue !important]the [color:c080=blue !important]nation.
Monique Morrison, member services officer at the SAJ who led the team, said the association's involvement is in keeping with its commitment to building the nation. "We see ourselves as stakeholders and are delighted to be involved in ways that can positively impact this generation of students and their teachers," Morrison said.
Over 5,000 students from primary, secondary and tertiary schools across Jamaica journeyed to the UWI to view various displays by corporate entities. Each entity demonstrated ways in which mathematics applies to their daily activities.
The display from the industry featured equipment used in the industry, including: ships, globes, cranes, stackers, trucks, shipping containers, and life rafts.
Members of the SAJ who helped to make the display possible are: Kingston Wharves Limited, Transocean Shipping, CaribStar Shipping, the Caribbean [color:c080=blue !important][color:c080=blue !important]Maritime Institute, and the Maritime Authority of Jamaica.
