MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica -- Nesta Carter has clocked the second fastest time this year over the 100 metres behind American Tyson Gay after a blistering 9.87 seconds (1.8m/s) win at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Madrid, Spain on Saturday.
Carter, a multiple relay gold medallist who has led off three of Jamaica’s world record breaking 4x100m teams, has replaced training partner and former world record holder Asafa Powell as the fastest Jamaican over the 100m this year and pushed world record holder Usain Bolt into third spot on the Jamaican list.
Carter whose personal best is 9.78 seconds set in Rieti, Italy in 2010, set the field alight with Americans Rakieem Salaam taking second (10.07 seconds) and Calesio Newman third in 10.10 seconds.
Meanwhile Jamaica’s Carrie Russell was fourth in the women’s 100m A race in 11.15 seconds behind three Americans led by Barbara Pierre’s 10.92 seconds. Shalonda Solomon was second with 11.04 seconds and Alexandria Anderson was third in 11.07 seconds.
