The University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica, hosted its annual Literary Festival and Cultural Showcase recently under the theme, 'Celebrating Jamaica's Evolving Dance Heritage: Step by Step' at its Papine campus.
The one-day festival took place in four segments: an Art Exhibition, a Literary Workshop, a Literary Festival and a Cultural Showcase. The day's celebration opened at the Centre for the Arts with an art exhibition by UTech's Visual Arts Group depicting the theme. The works were complemented with artefacts from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's library, which reflected the country's diverse dance heritage. Guest speaker at the event was internationally renowned artist, Laura Facey.
The Literary Workshop followed also at the centre with Dr Nicholeen DeGrasse-Johnson, principal of Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA) and former director, School of Dance. Dr DeGrasse-Johnson shared with students from secondary and tertiary institutions Dance through the Stages. The presentation was appropriately interspersed with live performances from School of Dance students demonstrating evolving dance forms over the years. High-school students participating in the workshop were also integrally involved in the practical sessions.
