Seaga, 80, who is currently the pro-chancellor of the institution, will be filling the vacancy left following the recent retirement of Lord Morris of Handsworth who was appointed UTech's first chancellor in 1999.
The recommendation for Seaga's appointment is to go to Education Minister Andrew Holness for his confirmation. Holness, as well as UTech President Prof Errol Morrison, could not be reached yesterday for a comment on Seaga's proposed appointment.
Our source said the process of appointing the chancellor involves a search by the university's council, which is comprised of a wide range of stakeholders including academia and the student council.
The chancellor is the head of the university and chairs at least one meeting annually of the university council, which is the supreme body of UTech.
In the absence of the chancellor, the meeting is chaired by the pro-chancellor.
Seaga served as Jamaica's fifth prime minister from 1980 to 1989. He was leader of the Opposition from 1989 until his retirement from active politics in 2005.
Lord Morris, generally known as Bill Morris, is a Jamaican-born life baron in the United Kingdom. He rose to become the first black leader of a British trade union when he served as general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union from 1992 to 2003. He became a member of the British House of Lords in 2006.
UTech was afforded university status in 1995 and was fully chartered in 1999.
