The current image of Black fathers and sons is almost totally negative. The popular perception is that Black fathers and sons are generally socially irresponsible; they are often portrayed as delinquent in the performance of their duties as spouses and seem to be uninterested in nurturing their offspring. Like most stereotypes, this negative portrait is an exaggeration of the reality.
In real life, however, there are countless Black fathers and sons, who are not only models of respectable behavior but have overcome virtually insurmountable obstacles in order to sustain and uplift their families and communities. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, under the distinguished leadership of President Thelma Thompson, has documented the lives of these ordinary men, who have done extraordinary for their families and communities. The University has published brief biographies of these often uncelebrated men in a book. Hopefully, the outcome will serve as an alternative to the prevalent stereotype and provide young Black people with positive role models.
If you know of any Black men--who have made a significant on the lives of their families and or communities please feel free to post about it under this thread!
