Chester Francis-Jackson, ContributorWith Mother's Day just a few days away, the almighty rush is on! Everyone is all a-twitter to secure the all-important preferred reservation to treat Mom in style, as a Queen for the day, relieving her of the chores and stress of caring for the family
Since the second Sunday in May was designated as Mother's Day in 1908, the world has embraced this unique celebration of motherhood, making it one of the most internationally observed holidays, probably second only to Christmas.
With Jamaica being primarily a matriarchal society, the celebration of Mother's Day is a premier social outing for families, especially those headed by Mr Mom - arbiter, confidant, arbitrator, scholar-in-chief, and CEO of the home and family.
For this universally celebrated day reserved for honouring our mothers, there is the Spanish Court Hotel and its charming general manager, Lee Ann Godfrey Porter, who, fully cognisant of the rush and chaos that sometimes come with planning an excursion for Mother's Day. In that vein, they have decided to transform their usually fabulous Sunday brunch into a spectacular showpiece and culinary uberfest. Their fab Rojo restaurant is the place to be come this Sunday.
Well, my darlings, in anticipation of Sunday's Mother's Day culinary fabfest, the management and staff of the Spanish Court hotel showcased their Mother's Day menu in the hotel's signature style of haute eleganza and culinary thrillers!
Dears, the experience began with a welcoming mimosa. And from there, in the lingo of pop parlance, 'the thing tun up'. Yes, my dears, on any social Richter scale, and in any lingua franca, we are talking a sensationally satisfying and rich gourmet outing - and then some!
Luvs, none of that commonplace or pedestrian menu. It was an outing for those with a sophisticated palate who appreciated the beauty of food prepared and served at its very best - and tasting even better than it looked.
Dears, chef Anthony Matthews and his staff put on a culinary show that will long be remembered for its wholesome fabulousness. Dovecakes, we are talking all that's fab here, and more.
For this here scribe, the fare began with a wickedly delicious and unquestionably hefty slice of strawberry cheesecake, chocolate truffles, and bubbling flute of mimosa. Dears, nothing beats such an opening salvo. And when we thought it could not get any better, they equalled our opening salvo and topped it in the most eloquent of culinary modes. The fare consisted of leg of lamb done up on a bed of rosemary bouquet; crispy fillet of snapper; a Hungarian-style beef stew; tropical barbecue chicken; stir-fry tofu and beans; mussels marinara with bow-tie pasta; pasta -a-la-Rastafari, and sweet-potato-purée.
Dears, there was ensalada tropicale, with a choice of romaine lettuce, kernel corn, iceberg lettuce, baby corn, sun-blushed tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, croutons, bacon bits, anchovies, and tons of other options for those who wanted to make their own garden salad. For those who did not, there were the international salads - Greek, American potato salad, caprice, Waldorf, mushroom and the five-bean salad, making it a simply fabulous station.
And then there were the platters! Cheeses, cold-cuts, roasts, fruits, and sushi as optional side dishes. But it was the dessert station that had this here scribe humming, my dears, and how!
Dears, suffice it to say oodles of mimosas and several hours later, there was no denying the majesty of the brunch on offer. And the good news is for Mother's Day, it will be all that, and more - a brunch fit for a queen and all her subjects!
