Shernett Callam, JNBS' senior manager of branch Operations, in her address to the graduates, pointed out that the course made it possible for participants to understand more about the basics of computers, appreciate the importance of security when using the Internet, as well as learn more about how LIVE by JN to assist them to manage their personal finances more effectively.
"With your newly honed computer skills, you will also be able to make better use of our ATM's, and other transaction points in our JN Express locations," she stated.
In addition to its in-branch banking facilities, Callam explained that "LIVE by JN is currently the second-largest transaction channel for financial activities within JNBS, outside of the use of ATMs and, therefore, we recognise the need for our members, and particularly our more senior members, to be more adept in the use of our online banking portal".
Cion Grant, member service officer with JNBS, taught the course from March to June. He conceded that the start of
the course was quite challenging, "however, it was also most rewarding, as gradually the participants achieved a better understanding about computers".
Eventually, he said, several of them were able to register on the LIVE by JN online banking portal.
JN member and Montego Bay resident Noel Cleghorn commended Jamaica National for the training programme and described it as a "hallmark of excellence".
He declared: "This course was very important, because we are living in an age where, if you are not computer literate you will be left behind. And this course brought us forward, particularly the senior citizens."
In addition to conducting banking transactions online, Cleghorn said "now, most of us can send emails, check
our mails."
Cleghorn, who was the first member of the graduating cohort to register for LIVE by JN online banking, was rewarded with a laptop computer.
Catherine Hall resident Evadne McIntosh, who also completed the course, said she was grateful for the opportunity as it equipped her with skills that will assist her when using the ATM and other electronic transaction channels provided by Jamaica National.
The training programme was the brainchild of JN General Manager Earl Jarrett, Callam said.
Another cadre of students will begin training soon, and plans are in place to roll out the training programme at other JNBS branch locations, given the success of the Montego Bay cohort and the interest being displayed in other regions.
