MONTEGO BAY, St James — Multiple relay gold medallist Nesta Carter has replaced training partner and former World Record Holder Asafa Powell as the fastest Jamaican man over the 100m this year, with a sparkling 9.87 seconds clocking at an IAAF World Challenge meeting in Madrid, Spain, yesterday and is now the second fastest man behind American Tyson Gay.
Pushed by an almost perfect trail wind of 1.8 metres per second just under the legally allowable 2.0m/s, Carter whose personal best is 9.78 seconds set in Rieti, Italy, in 2010, and who earlier this year ran 9.97 seconds, outclassed the field with Americans Rakieem 'Mookie' Salaam taking second in 10.07 seconds and Calesio Newman third in 10.10 seconds.

Carter's time was also a new meeting record.
Powell, who has shown a return to form after placing seventh in the 100m at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Trials in late June, had run 9.88 seconds in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 4.
World Record Holder Usain Bolt, who will be bidding to win the men's 100m title at the IAAF World Championships next month in Moscow, Russia, after being disqualified in Daegu, South Korea. two years ago, is next with a season's best 9.94 seconds that he ran to win the title at the National Trials.
Carrie Russell was fourth in the women's 100m A race in 11.15 seconds behind three Americans led by Barbara Pierre's 10.92 seconds. Shalonda Solomon was second with 11.04 seconds and Alexandria Anderson was third in 11.07 seconds.
